Murdered Swedish Journalist to be Remembered With Worldwide Charity Events

- Agustus 10, 2018

It has been one year since Swedish journalist Kim Wall was brutally murdered by an inventor she was interviewing for a story, and her family has organized a charity run in her name — with people around the world planning to participate.

Wall boarded Danish inventor Peter Madsen’s submarine on August 10, 2017, but never returned to her home, so her boyfriend called the police later that night to report her missing.

Her torso was discovered on a beach a week and a half later; she had been stabbed more than a dozen times. Her head, legs, and arms were all found separately, as were a knife and a saw.

Madsen was arrested and initially charged with negligent manslaughter. His story repeatedly changed, and police found disturbing and violent videos on his computer. He was ultimately convicted of murder, indecent handling of a corpse, and sexual assault and sentenced to life in prison earlier this year.

Now, her family is raising money in her name to support female journalists around the world.

According to The Local Sweden:

More than 500 participants – organizers had to close applications in order to make sure the route was safe – will run or walk either five, ten or 21 kilometres along paths and beaches close to her family home, and have already raised tens of thousands of kronor for the Kim Wall Memorial Fund set up in honour of the journalist.

Other runs will take place in a total of cities across the world, including Stockholm, Copenhagen, New York, Beijing, Paris, Istanbul and Tel Aviv. They won’t be timed or include any prizes.

The run takes place today, August 10.
